What We’re Playing

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2

Our Score

was halfway through the opening level of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2’s campaign, unloading bolt rifle rounds alongside my two squadmates, when I found myself smiling at just how good it feels to be back in this futuristic grimdark fray. It’s been over a decade since the original, but Space Marine 2 reinvigorates the squad-based shooter series with seeming ease.

Helldivers 2

Our Score

Our first encounter with a Bile Titan was pure chaos. Dropping into a hot zone swarming with Terminids—the alien bugs from Helldivers 2—we burned through all our extra lives before even locating the beast. Just as we were scrambling to escape, we ran straight into it: an enormous, acid-dripping monstrosity that dwarfed anything we’d faced before. It spit venom, loomed over us like a nightmare, and took everything we had to bring it down—bullets, airstrikes, orbital cannons, grenades, and a hefty dose of luck. Against all odds, we defeated it and made it back to our evac ship seconds before our position was overrun.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

Our Score

Remember the sheer number of dildos in Cyberpunk 2077 at launch? You couldn’t turn a corner in Night City without looting one, so much so that CD Projekt Red had to patch out a significant portion. While the lootable dildos weren’t inherently an issue, their overwhelming presence highlighted a disconnect between the game’s ambitious narrative and its sometimes over-the-top shock humor.

With Phantom Liberty, that imbalance has been addressed. After some reflection, the expansion zeroes in on the type of Cyberpunk story it wants to tell—and nails it. Blending the rebellious spirit of Mike Pondsmith’s tabletop RPG with an intricately woven spy thriller and cutting-edge visuals, Phantom Liberty represents Cyberpunk 2077 at its finest.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Our Score

As I eagerly slashed, blasted, wooed, looted, and delved through the stunningly immersive world of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, one thought kept circling in my mind: “Wait, BioWare made this? 2024 BioWare?” Coming on the heels of the Anthem debacle—preceded by Dragon Age: Inquisition and Mass Effect: Andromeda, which, in hindsight, were just okay—I’d started to doubt whether the once-legendary masters of RPGs could still deliver a game like this. Turns out, they absolutely can.

Diablo 4

Our Score

Playing Diablo 4 feels like hearing your favorite band perform their greatest hit live—it’s thrilling to experience, even though you know exactly how the song will unfold from the first iconic note. While Diablo 4 doesn’t revolutionize ARPGs or push the boundaries of the genre it helped define, the refinements, improvements, and borrowed innovations it introduces have crafted what is undoubtedly the best Diablo yet.
